Chakat Forestwalker leads the group of friends along a path through the forest on a sunny day. Quickpaw and Trina follow close behind, followed by Kris and Goldfur, with Midnight picking up the rear.
I did this piece as the cover for
goldfur's upcoming book Forest Tales, due to be released this Anthrocon!

Thank you =D
Well, about the dappled light effect, I kindof make it a mix of thick line-like shapes and ovals, and I try to make it look not very ordered, so it looks natural and not artificial... What I do in order to keep it consistent on the characters, is I shade the characters with a wash of light grey before painting any of the colors - to block in the shadows first - and I put the dapple shadows at that time - and then I've got them marked out for me for when I do the colors over that layer... Making it more subtle than whatever markings there are also helps to make it not look like markings...

Very cool, very detailed, and very nice artwork. I love the leaf shadows, however, the chakats have no shadows. I noticed this first looking at Forestwalker.
Awesome work though, and you've inspired me on some ideas.
I hope you don't mind the critique.
And how did you do the effect of the shadow of the leaves?

This is truly an amazing piece, such wonderful detail put into it. I absolutely love how you drew all of the characters.
Though i have to say the background looks a bit out of place. I'm not sure why but it doesn't look right to me. It just seems that the background and the characters are drawn completely different. The characters seem so colorful and alive and the forest background looks kinda dull and dreary. No offense of course, but thats just my 2-cents, still a wonderful piece

Oh, i see. I'm not much of an artist, really my words of critique or opinion are not very useful. From what i see, she is a wonderful artist and i dont have a doubt in my mind she would create her drawings as commissioners or friends like their characters, and background drawn
While the characters look cute, and quite flawless, what really sets your pictures apart are your backgrounds, IMO.
You seem to be able to consistently walk the fine line between being too simplistic, thus losing definition, and being too accurate which often gives pictures a plastic-y, rendered look. No, your stye looks almost impressionistic in its play with light and shadow and subtle colour hue variations, the brush strokes all being set exactly in the right places, while still preserving that seemingly random (concerning their placement), organic look.
That's really something that impresses me over and over again!
Jojo

My goal was to be an artist as a career, though I wasn't totally sure of what kind - I didn't expect I'd be self-employed and working freelance full time - thats probably something that would have scared me conceptually ^.^. But it seems to work out okay, and I have a lot more freedom this way
Well, I'm pretty sure they're all lactating by this point, so their breasts would be bigger. Since Leanna isn't in the picture, it's likely this is before they found hir, so Trina wouldn't have had her kid yet.
Or Leanna's back at home with the cubs...
Any idea what stories are a part of the book, Kacey?

I wonder if this is part of the story where Forestwalker meets midnight for the first time, although I don't remember Quickpaw being there. Perhaps a different one, not yet written, or just a scene I can't remember at the moment...?
I think I've found my new desktop for the month ^^
But anyway, I really love the attention to detail in both the characters and the background.
I'm tempted to compare you to the modern day Peter Paul Rubens of furry art ^^;

Another trully amazing piece! Perfect form, wonderful techniques on the backgrounds! I love the natural look of it, more like a liesurely walk in the woods than an organised hike. PErfect! But I did notice a lack of shadows on Chakats... But, still, perfection is a myth. But you're damned close to it! Keep up te amazing work!

I saw this at work yesterday surfing FA at lunchtime- I just sat back and was like, wow, wow, as I admired this wonderful piece of artwork. Your accurate attention to detail just amazes me. I can feel the coolness of the shaded woods and the warmth of the filtered sunlight in your background. Beautiful chakat bodies; strong, solid, and balanced. Forestwalker is gorgeous with that jaguar coat! Good job on all the characters. Excellent choice for the book's cover! I've got to get that when it comes out.
Absolutely stunning work. I'm always in awe of your amazing painting skills. The characters fit in so well with the environment around them and the lighting and shadows you've created in the piece just work so incredibly well. You can really see the detailing of the eucalypt trees in this picture and you've really managed to capture the look and feel of a eucalypt forest in Australia!:)
